Nigeria announces major solar project

Postby Richard Akindele » Mon May 08, 2006 2:56 pm

LAGOS, Nigeria, May 8 (UPI) -- The Nigerian government on Thursday unveiled plans for its first official solar energy project.

The Nigerian commissioner for science and technology, Hamzat Kadiri, announced the $81,000 plan at a press briefing on his office's activities, according to a report in the Lagos newspaper Vanguard.

The first solar installation will be in the Lagos state village of Kodji, and 10 other rural communities in the state will have similar solar projects in place before the end of the year, Kadiri said via the report.

Kadiri called the projects "an environmentally friendly alternative to the use of fossil fuels to generate power," the report said.

Kodji is home to about 5,000 people, most of them farmers or fishermen, the report said, and the state solar project would provide enough electricity for all of them.

Kadiri told reporters that connecting the village to the national electricity grid would have cost 15 times as much as the government will pay to outfit the village with a solar system.

Nigeria's electricity is inconsistent, but because the tropical country receives sunshine year-round, solar is "the most viable source of renewable energy," the report quoted Kadiri as saying.

This new emphasis on solar energy comes though Nigeria is the largest oil producer in Africa and the 10th largest producer of crude oil in the world.

In 2005, it produced 2.4 million bbl/d of crude.

FG Begins Energy Diversification

Postby Richard Akindele » Tue Jul 11, 2006 4:43 am

The Federal Government has commissioned the first three pilot solar energy project leading to the diversification of Nigeria's energy sourcing and utilisation in three states.

The solar energy project targeted at transforming the electricity needs of the rural communities have been completed in May this year, at all the three pilot sites in Imo, Jigawa and Ondo states.

At the commissioning of the one at Garkon-Alli Village in Jigawa State, Minister of State for Power and Steel, Alhaji Abdulhamid Ahmed, said the project is the result of a bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and the Japanese Government in 2001, for the ultimate objective of adding value to the lives of the remotest rural populace.

"This pilot project is part of the Master-plan study for utilisation of solar energy in Nigeria being conducted by the Japanese Government. Imo, Jigawa, Ondo and the Federal Capital Territory were selected in the Master-plan.

"President Olusegun Obas-anjo has commissioned that of Ondo State, Minister for Power and Steel, Liyel Imoke, has commissioned that of Imo State."

He said the pilot project in Jigawa comprised of a mosque, 40 solar home system, battery charging system that will serve 20 househlods and 10 street lights.

Local contractors were engaged all through the stages from procurement to installation, the facility will be leased to government and people of Nigeria by the Japanese government for a period of 20 years, he said.

A long term plan for power supply in isolated rural areas with solar energy up to the year 2020 is to be developed as enunciated in the Master-plan study of solar energy in the country.
