The Wealthy Poor

The Wealthy Poor

Postby Richard Akindele » Mon Apr 09, 2007 10:30 pm

Most Nigerians are living at subsistence level. Quite inexplicable for a nation that earns $1 billion a week from oil revenues alone. I believe the income is even higher than that, considering the high cost of gasoline these days.

All kinds of doug is flowing into Nigeria, yet the Nigerian people are destitute. Living day to day is a way of life. Most people do not know where their next meal is going to come from.

Medical care is appalling. Basically, you're condemned to die if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness, since you barely earn enough money for a good meal a day, let alone have extra to pay for very expensive surgery/drugs.

Furthermore, there is no such thing as government welfare, or social security income. If you're old and can't work, you better have people that can take care of you, else, you'd be pan handling on the street for crumbs.

But why? What is the reason for this state of affairs in Nigeria, despite the nations enormous wealth?

A billion US dollars oil income a week in Nigeria is worth many more billions on the International scene, since the cost of living is lower in Nigeria than Internationally. Furthermore, the fact that oil money is guaranteed income and requires no advertising costs, makes the billion dollars a week even higher.

This is a case of a few people in power oppressing their own people.

Most of Nigeria's income comes from the western world. Unfortunately, it's only a matter of time before the revenue finds it's way back where it came from.

How, you ask?

1. Nigerian economy is consumer-based. The nation produces nothing that can be exported. Hence, money has to be taken out of the system to purchase the Merceded Benzes, the medicines, the computers, stereo equipments, etc.

Although Nigeria is blessed with some of the smartest people on the planet, there is no interest on the part of the government to use these to better the nation. All of Nigeria's brains aspire to leave the country, and they often do every chance they get.

2. The biggest culprit for Nigeria's poverty is corruption at higher government levels, and by extension, Swiss banks, banks in England, America, the Carribean, etc that accept funds looted from Nigeria.

If an individual tries to make a $20 million dollar deposit at your bank, from a country that is known for corruption, you know without a doubt that such money is stolen. If you accept that money for deposit, you're a part of the criminal enterprise. Western financial establishments always accept such loots.

The western media often talks about corruption in developing countries. Unfortunately the role played by developed nations in perpetuating this behavior is conveniently never mentioned. Therefore, the western media is also a part of the criminal enterprise that keeps developing nations corrupt.

So what is the solution to poverty in Nigeria?
How do the Nigerian people fight the ominous negative forces outlined in this article?
