Free Phone calls with Skype

Postby Richard Akindele » Fri Jul 03, 2009 4:18 pm

If you own a computer (desktop or laptop), you can make free phone calls to anybody in the world who also has a computer.

If you don't own a computer, you can use any Internet cafe that has Skype installed. The only thing with an Internet cafe is that your call may not be so private, since people can hear you.

In addition to a computer, you would need a headset.

You can purchase a headset for as little as $5. See http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... rder=PRICE

Free phone calls can be done using Skype.

Skype is a software that emulates a phone. Such programs are termed Voice over IP (VoIP). Basically, it's a computer-to-computer call.

Here is how...

1. Download Skype from http://www.skype.com/
2. Install it.
3. Tell the people you want to call to also install skype.
4. You add your friends to your list, and they add you to theirs.
5. Now watch a video of how to make a Skype call.

As the video shows, not only can you talk to people, you can also see them. For that, you need to have a webcam on your computer. The price of Web cams start from about $10. See http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... rder=PRICE

So what are you waiting for? With used laptops selling for as little as $150 these days, there's no reason not to own one.

I dont agree with that cause not everyone can afford it instead it should be said like this
So what are you waiting for? With used laptops selling for as low as $150 these days, the only reason not to own one should be Affordability.
i think it sounds better this way.

You are correct. However, this post is meant primarily for Nigerians abroad who call Nigeria frequently. Or Nigerians at home who call people abroad.

It's safe to assume that anybody who ordinarily can make an International phone call, can surely afford to own a used laptop, since International phone calls aren't exactly cheap.

BTW, in addition to Skype, the same thing can be done with ICQ.

Many Skype alternatives exist now...

1__ Google talk

2__ Tinychat

3__ Viber

4__ Goober

5__ VoxOx

6__ Google+ Hangouts

7__ Google voice

8__ ooVoo

BTW, Microsoft's paid a whopping US$ 8.5 billion to purchase Skype. Since microsoft took over skype I have had nothing but problems. When doing text chat, delivery is delayed sometimes by minutes. Also, computer-to-phone calls are more expensive now.
