Former Head of State and two-time Presidential Candidate of the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP), General Muhammadu Buhari has accused Nigerian leaders for failing to improve the lives of the people in the last 10 years despite the huge resources that accrued to the nation from 1999 to date.

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has been ruling the country in the last 10 years since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

General Buhari told the BBC Hausa service in an interview monitored in Abuja that it was unthinkable that some villages in Nigeria are still without schools, hospitals and other basic social amenities. He said the nation will not develop as long as leaders continue to fail in the discharge of their responsibilities to the people. When asked to compare between military rule and the state of affairs today under a democratic government and say which is better for Nigerians, General Buhari said: "Democracy is best form of governance especially if its tenets of free and fair elections, and if the rules will be respected.

In the interview which was part of BBC's on going programme focusing on the 10 years of democracy in Nigeria, the former head of state also listed ways in which credible elections can be achieved in Nigeria.
