Need to emulate

Postby Richard Akindele » Fri May 08, 2009 4:10 pm

Saying that Nigeria is a backward nation, is merely stating the obvious. Nigeria needs improvement in more places than one.

The good news is that we don't have to remain backward.

What happens is that most decision makers in Nigeria are generally unaware of what obtains outside of their immediate environment.

So to help reverse this trend, here is one thing we should consider adopting.

This page:

http://shop.usps.com/webapp/wcs/stores/ ... gory=11820

allows you to order shipping boxes free of charge from the US Postal Service.

In addition, you can print postage and shipping labels directly online.

This simple service allows anybody to package their parcel at home, weight it on a scale, and print postage online.

Once the package is ready, you go online and tell the US Postal Service to pick it up. Ultimately, you do not need to leave your home or office in order to mail a parcel.

This significantly cuts down on lines at the post office, and facilitates commerce, since you don't have to take time off to visit the post office just to mail your parcels.

Nigeria needs to start thinking in this direction.

Not to sound self-serving, but somebody like me who is a software programmer, can easily create a solid application that will do what the US Postal Service website does.

So, what exactly is preventing us from doing this?

Lack of an enabling environment for such things to happen.
There are lots of Nigerian who can do more than what you've just said but the finance is not there.

One's greatest barrier that can easily hinder one's business plan or aspiration is the amount of money needed to establish and run the business.
Most people who want to start their own business usually face the problem of funding.
If in an event were the person wanting to start a business personally lacks the fund to do so, there are other legal means of borrowing such as:
(1)looking for an investor,
(2)lending from banks or other related financial institutions,
(3) Getting financial support from the Government, etcetera.

But here in Nigeria, Do you think it will be an easy task for an average Nigerian to use any of these 3 means of borrowing?

Actually, the topic is about how to make the Postal service more efficient. Not about setting up a business.

Nigeria can revamp the Postal service, irrespective of the business environment, since the use of Post offices is not limited to businesses alone.

I know that this topic is about how to make our Postal service more efficient but all the way, it also relates to innovation.
And then you used yourself as an example, that you as a software programmer, can easily create a solid application that will do what the US Postal Service website does.
And at the end,you asked that what exactly is preventing us from doing this?
So that was why i used the problems of also starting a private business(innovation) in Nigeria as an example to answer your question.

Now I see your point.

In general, it's the Nigerian government I'm calling upon to shape up.

It all appears as though we're all shouting in the wilderness, but that's no reason to quit talking. One day somebody with the people's well-being at heart will take our ideas and run with it.

Nigeria is neither short on brains, nor resources. We just need the right people in place to start moving forward.
