NAMASA to Establish 24 Hrs Internet Based Rapid Response

Management of National Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NAMASA) is to establish a 24 hours internet based rapid response and ship registry to meet the demands of industry operators. Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NAMASA, Mrs. Mfon Usoro, said that the 24 hours internet base search and rescue is part of the targets the new management has set for itself.

She said the above is part of the agency's way of ensuring that a rapid response mechanism is put in place as soon as possible.

Usoro noted that already, two stations for the imported equipment that are waiting in the port for clearance are ready and would be moved down for installation. She also said that three search and rescue vessels, which are ready for use at the Nigerdock, would soon be dry-docked while competent hands would be engaged to man the stations to ensure that they could be reached at anytime when there is problem anywhere in the country.

The NAMASA boss also disclosed that the supervising ministry has given the management approval to recall or engage the number of surveyors that would be required to perform its port and flag state control.

On the ship registry, Usoro pointed out that a lot of work has been done from the report made available to her and that they are at the implementation stage which would commence immediately.

According to her, "one other thing we can do at ship registry is 24 hour online service. You will all agree with me that the services of a ship registry must be online. That is not just for the ship registration, it is also for our rapid response because it is important for any-body to be able to access it ...for assistants. "

Usoro stressed that when that is achieved, it would be easy to contact the agency and for it to contact other agencies also involved in similar services.

She noted that management would also pay close attention to wreck removal and the strict implementation of the Cabotage law. On corporation with other government agencies, she pointed out that the new management would approach it from the commercially driven angle.

Vanguard.
