How to improve to Skype quality

Are you a part of the VOIP phone revolution? You should be. If you make International phone calls, you are inevitably using voip in part or in whole. VOIP basically carries your phone voice digitally over the Internet, and it's reinjected into the destination phone system in digital or analog form.

Today there is a revolution in VOIP in the form of computer softwares. You basically install a phone program on your computer, that you can use to chat with your friends anywhere in the world who either have a phone, or who also have the same program installed on their computer. Examples of such programs are Skype, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, Goober, etc. Computer-to-computer calls are free. It just costs whatever you pay for Internet access. Computer-to-phone calls aren't free, but much cheaper than traditional phone-to-phone calls.

The king and most used among these softwares is Skype. Skype connects two chat clients through intermediate computers called supernodes. When computers are behind a firewall or are using NAT for routing, a supernode is the computer through which the traffic is routed.

The longer you use Skype, the more supernodes that is cached on your computer. The downside to that is that your Skype may be using stale supernodes, when new nodes appear. Ultimately, when chatting with somebody, say near you, the call could be routed through a supernode on another continent.

To solve this problem, you need to refresh your list of supernodes. The list is saved on your computer in a file called shared.xml. You just need to delete that file. Once deleted, a new list would be downloaded the next time you run Skype.

Follow the steps...

1. Shutdown Skype.
2. Search for the location of shared.xml.
On Windows Vista, it's located at C:UsersA MyersAppDataRoamingSkype.
On XP, C:Document and SettingsusernameApplication DataSkype.
On Linux, /home/username/.Skype//b>.
3. Delete shared.xml.
4. Restart Skype.

This change should help improve your Skype call quality.
