Nigeria to host big VoIP gathering

Lagos is to host the third annual African Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) forum, from July 31 to August 3, hosted by computing and communication events organiser Aitec Africa and a Nigerian ICT magazine, IT Edge.

Aitec group chairperson Sean Moroney said that the third African forum on Internet telephony would present an opportunity for telecommunication operators, ISPs and corporate users to learn more about the new developments in VoIP.

“By transmitting phone calls over the worldwide Internet infrastructure, costs are dramatically reduced – offering a major opportunity for Nigeria and its neighbours to introduce competitive phone charges, he said.

The forum is being held under the auspices of the Nigerian Communications Commission, which has taken a leadership position in the continent by developing a liberal regulatory regime for telecommunications, which has encouraged progressive implementation of evolving technologies, including VoIP systems.

It will be the first time in Africa’s fastest growing market that a forum will focus on VoIP as one of the major drivers of modern telecommunications, with potential to redefine the entire market structure, forcing operators to remodel their businesses.

Topics will cover policy and strategy issues, such as the impact of VoIP as a driving force behind the African telecommunications sector and VoIP as a bridge for the communication gap.

In addition, the forum will cover technology and service issues, such as the evolution of VoIP from a niche technology to mainstream voice, best practices in voice and broadband, VoIP cost and quality in Africa, the challenges of deploying VoIP in Africa.

Four specialised training workshops will also be held. The first, an interactive workshop for corporate users, will provide a detailed Introduction to VoIP, and will provided by, Sunday Folayan, MD of Skannet Nigeria. The second is aimed at Internet service providers (ISPs) and telecom operators and will focus on international VoIP links, with training provided by Mawuli Tse, sales director for Africa at iBasis, from the US, while a workshop on Progressive VoIP Regulation, presented by Dr Gillian Marcelle, principal consultant, Technology for Development, from South Africa and Survival strategies for ISPs and cyber cafes, by Russell Southwood, CEO of Balancing Act, from the UK, will also be held.
