Robbers Wreak Havoc in Anambra

Postby Richard Akindele » Wed Jul 26, 2006 1:40 am

Major towns in Anambra State came under the siege to armed robbers, Monday, barely 24 hours after the Nnewi Police station was burnt and the inmates set free.

The robbers started their operation at the emerging industrial town of Anambra State, Nnewi, where at least eight persons were said to been injured and several millions of naira carted away.

An eyewitness account told Daily Champion that the Nnewi robbery incident took place at about 12noon when the daredevil robbers, armed with sophisticated, stormed Ibeto Avenue, Nnewi with a jeep and a red Toyota car.

The robbers, immediately started shooting indiscriminately with about eight persons, including passersby sustaining severe bullet wounds.

The victims were later taken to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi where they were receiving treatment.

The Joint Military/Police team who rushed to the scene of the incident could not track down the robbers as they escaped and headed towards Onitsha.

At Onitsha, the robbers were said have terrorized people along New Market Road, where they snatched a Ghana Must Go bag containing a huge sum of money from a man heading to a bank in the commercial town.

The robbers apparently afraid of the Joint Military/Police team quickly shot indiscriminately through Awka road to Enugu-Onitsha Express Way, from where they escaped.

An eyewitness said that they had a brief encounter with the Joint Military/Police team at ABS Junction, where one of the robbers was shot at the arm.

Effort to get the Acting Commissioner of police for Anambra State, John Haruna and the Nnewi Area Commander Mr. Chukwudi Obi, an assistant Commissioner of Police failed, but a senior police officer at Onitsha Area command confirmed the incidence. According to the source the that the Onitsha Area Commander, Mr. Matthew Uyanna directed to draft more men to keep the robbers at a bay.

Robbery incidents have become a common feature in the state since the Onitsha crisis started.

People in the state have attributed increase in crime wave to the ban on MASSOB, NARTO and disbandment of various task forces, the Anambra Vigilante Servvices (AVS) and market vigilantes.
