Lawyer Shot Dead in Jos

Postby Richard Akindele » Fri Jul 07, 2006 3:00 pm

Barely three days after a governorship aspirant in Plateau state was assassinated and a production staff of the NTA, Jos, died in suspicious circumstances, a lawyer has been shot dead in Jos, heightening fears among residents of the once serene city.

The lawyer identified as Mr. Pedras Efe Ofokpo, was said to have been killed Tuesday night at Heipang Lodge along Tafawa Balewa road. Chairman, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Plateau state, Mr. Garba Pwul, said the association is investigating the incident to unravel what led to the killing. Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Richard Chime, who confirmed the incident to journalists, said it happened between 8.00 pm and 9.00 pm on Tuesday when some hoodlums went to the hotel and attacked the deceased.

He said the police is still investigating the matter and that they are leaving all options open as "one cannot foreclose anything", he added.

The police commissioner however stated that no arrests have been made in connection w ith the incident but raised hopes that before next week, the police would come out with something concrete on the previous murders in the state. Though he said the police is worried about the rise in violent crimes in the state, Mr Chime said"the truth is that in this serviceat times there is a surge in crime, it does happen even in the entire country when you have to restrategize and contain it".

He disclosed that the police command has identified some areas where they would concentrate more attention and that by the time the equipment promised by the state government to boost security in the state arrives thisweekend, there would be positive changes in the security situation in the state. "We are on top of the situation. One thing I want to assure is that by next week, there's going to be a major change", he pledged.
