Abuja

The Federal Government on August 8 in Abuja announced the setting up of a specialized firm to manage and explore the commercial viability of the soon-to-be-launched Nigeria Communications Satellite.

The new company, Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT LTD), is to ensure that the Federal Government generates as much revenue as possible from the sector.

A governing board has also been set up for NIGCOMSAT. The board has the following responsibilities:

- To facilitate full implementation of the scheme

- To ensure the provision of proper take-off funds for NIGCOMSAT LTD, and

- To assist the management of the company towards the successful implementation and management of its objectives.

At the ceremony to introduce NIGCOMSAT, Science and Technology Minister, Prof. Turner Isoun, explained that NIGCOMSAT LTD was registered with the approval of President Olusegun Obasanjo and would acquire the assets and liabilities of the Nigerian Communications Satellite project.

Prof. Isoun also announced the setting up of another firm to help market images from the first Nigerian satellite. This firm is to be known as Nigeria Images and Consultancy Services.

What the heck is NIGCOMSAT?

How about giving it a simple acronym such as NCS, NCSL, NCOMSAT, or something to that effect?

What is the proper pronounciation of NIGCOMSAT anyway?
Is it naij-com-sat?
Or neeg-com-sat?

That's why simplification is needed.

As for the project itself, as usual, Nigeria is putting the cart before the horse. Here is a nation whose citizens both young and old are hungry, yet, nobody has the sense or care to take care of that fundamental need first. Rather, our primary interest is to be able to brag about having satellites in orbit.
