Unqualified Engineers Affect Industrial Growth

A Maintenance Engineer and consultant to oil firms on safety measures, Mr. Mike Orugbo, has condemned the poor attitude of Nigerians to proactive maintenance saying the development was affecting the nation's industrial growth.

Orugbo stated this on Thursday at the end of a three-day international seminar on Advanced Maintenance jointly organized by O-SECUL Consultancy Services, MRO Software and Emerson Process Management in Ikeja.

Orugbo, whose firm, O-SECUL, bought the moribund National Fertilizer Company of Nigeria, said most public corporations in the country collapsed because of inadequate maintenance of multi-million dollar machines and other infrastructure.

He said his findings over the years pointed to the fact that unqualified engineers had been hired by the authorities to handle the maintenance of most manufacturing firms.

Explaining the essence of the international seminar, Orugbo said it was aimed at educating engineers in charge of maintenance on how best to maintain the equipment in their care and safe their firms from collapse.

He said timely maintenance of machines was the best way of achieving good return on investment because the purchase of machinery, equipment or factory buildings represents an investment.

According to him, paying attention to Reliability-Based Maintenance strategy by management of manufacturing firms would enhance an established and acceptable suitable business performance.

He warned management of firms against unnecessary reduction of budgets prepared for the maintenance of their facilities by the technical staff but called for frequent supervision of their activities.

Orugbo also advised senior management staff of firms against taking drastic action against technical staff whenever a breakdown of equipment was recorded; rather he called for proper investigation into the cause.

Enumerating benefits derivable from Reliability Based Maintenance, the expert explained that it could lead to increased plant capacity/production through the elimination of machinery breakdowns.
