IN a show of solidarity and appreciation to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) fight against fake drugs, Egyptian Pharmaceutical Groups has donated two million Ferro-Zinc Capsules to boost healthcare delivery system in the country.

The drugs, valued at about N10 million, came on the heels of the recent visit of Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Dora Akunyili, to some pharmaceutical companies in Egypt.

Professor Akunyili, who disclosed this during the visit of a delegation of Egyptian pharmaceutical companies to her office in Abuja, said the capsules would help ameliorate the conditions of Nigerian children suffering from anaemia.

She said the donation was “the beginning of a strong bond of friendship, co-operation and partnership between Nigerian and Egyptian pharmaceutical companies.

According to her, “the Federal Government will empower and encourage Nigerian pharmaceutical companies to establish drug factories in Egypt because they have competent personnel and wherewithal to do so.

The NAFDAC boss praised the gesture of the donor companies (Sayed Alah International and Pharco Companies), noting with satisfaction efforts made by the Egyptian National Drug Regulatory Authority to reduce the incidence of fake and counterfeit drugs in Egypt.

Professor Akunyili urged the Egyptian Drug Regulatory Authority to learn from the experience of NAFDAC and strategies to combat the fake drugs phenomenon.

Earlier, the leader of the pharmaceutical group, Mr. Sherine Helmy, disclosed that not less than 50 Egyptian’s drugs were scheduled for registration with NAFDAC and, therefore, requested the NAFDAC boss to help accelerate the registration processes.

Mr. Helmy commended the NAFDAC boss for her dogged fight against fake drugs and for flying Nigeria’s flag high wherever she went.
