As part of aid to improve Nigeria's healthcare delivery system, particularly to reduce maternal and infant mortality, an Egyptian firm, Sayed International and Pharco companies has donated 2 million Ferro- Zinc capsules,a dietary supplement valued at N10 million Naira in the market.
Making the donation to the country through NAFDAC Director - General, Professor Dora Akunyili, the leader of the Egyptian delegation, Mr Sherine Helmy told the NAFDAC boss that the gesture was to support Nigeria's effort to ameliorate the problem of anaemia in children and nursing mothers.
He said the phenomenon continues to claim the lives of many women, especially during child birth.
Helmy said that for a nation to stem her child and maternal mortality level, effort must be made to improve the quality of food of the people, the absence of which he said dietary supplements can also serve.
According to him, the donation was to identify with the worthy course of action embarked upon in the last few years by NAFDAC, as well as to strengthen relations between the two countries.
He however said that Egypt has a total of 50 range of quality pharmaceuticals lined up for export to Nigeria, but solicited the support of the NAFDAC boss to ensure speedy verification of the drugs.
In her remark, Prof. Akunyili expressed government's gratitude for the gesture, saying it signified commencement of excellent bilateral relations with the two countries. She said anaemia has for long plagued most women, children and men due to lack of adequate diets. She said malnourished people easily fall prey to all kinds of diseases, stressing that the ferro-zinc capsules would go a long way to support millions of people.
She expressed government's readiness to encourage opening of Nigerian pharmaceuticals companies in Egypt as a way of reciprocating the good gesture.
She described drugs made in Nigeria as being subjected to strict international quality control standards.
