Retreat on longevity ends in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria, 07/10 - President Olusegun Obasanjo has charged Nigerians to consider changing their general life styles as a means of increasing life expectancy.

Speaking in Abuja Saturday, at the end of a two-day retreat on life expectancy in Nigeria, Obasanjo also stressed the need for his compatriots to "take personal, family and community hygiene more seriously".

He called on the citizenry "to take daily exercise as a routine activity, and promote enlightenment on the dangers of self- medication".

The President said that the retreat had called the attention of government to "the rising epidemic in trauma, principally due to road traffic accidents and neglect of the control of non- communicable diseases".

However, he said there were strong indications that government was making significant progress in controlling the spread of HIV/AIDS and the improvement of its low-level routine immunisation.

Obasanjo assured that the federal government would implement the recommendations of the six working groups that looked at different areas during the retreat.

"We will work with the evolving political transition processes at federal, state and local government levels to incorporate our strategies into our party manifesto and the campaign programmes of our candidates for the elections in 2007," he said.

Life expectancy in Africa`s most population nation dropped to an all-time low of 46.74 years in 2005, from 51.56 years in 2000.
