United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organisation have raised alarm over water contamination in the country saying that 'more than' 70 per cent of water sources in Nigeria are contaminated and injurious to health'.

The report warned that 'the country's health would be in jeopardy if the quality of water continued to decline and if no effort was geared towards improving the quality of technologies and application of best management'

A joint report released Tuesday by the two agencies said 'five hydrological areas where 50 per cent of the 18 water samples for borehole and utility pipe technologies were found to be contaminated.

The UNICEF/WHO 2005 joint report on drinking water quality in Nigeria attributed the contamination to 'non-compliance with the WHO guidelines for drinking water by many communities in the country.

It stated that 'the worst case of water contamination was found in five hydrological areas where 50 per cent of the 18 water samples analysed for borehole and utility pipe technologies were found to be contaminated.
