Federal Medical Centres are a disaster

President Olusegun Obasanjo has pledged his administration's resolve to take required action in addressing the problems of infrastructure and funding in Federal Medical Centres (FMCs) in the country.

Speaking at a meeting with the chairmen and chief executives of 25 Federal Medical Centres in Nigeria, at the State House, Abuja, on May 11, President Obasanjo said that the centres would receive even greater attention after the ongoing refurbishment of federally owned teaching hospitals in the country.

The President recalled that the Federal Government established the Federal Medical Centres in states without Federal University Teaching Hospitals in order to ensure the even spread of medical facilities across the country.

"I have no hesitation to say that the Federal Medical Centres will complement the teaching hospitals and together form the largest apex institutions in delivering health care in the country," he noted, while commending the chairmen and chief executives for the relative peace in their institutions.

The Minister of State, Health, Mrs. Halima Alao, thanked President Obasanjo for allocating N700 million out of the debt relief funds set aside for attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to ten Federal Medical Centres.

The Chairman, Committee of Chairmen of Federal Medical Centres, Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, who led the delegation, commended the vision, relentless commitment and political will demonstrated by President Obasanjo in repositioning tertiary health care delivery in the country.
