Julius Berger to Pay Fine for Fake Drugs

Postby Richard Akindele » Fri May 05, 2006 4:57 pm

The last seems not to have been heard on Julius Berger, as the Director General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Dora Akunyili said that the company would be fined for dealing in fake and adulterated drugs in Nigeria.

The NAFDAC boss, who made this known yesterday at the destruction of fake and unwholesome drugs worth N150m at the Shagamu dump site, Ogun State, also said as part of the punishment, the construction company would be made to write an apology letter to Nigerian government and her people.

"Julius Berger has committed multiple offences in Nigeria. A situation where the expatriates do not use drugs given to their Nigerian counterparts. Apart from that, they also sell out the same drugs to Nigerian drug marketers and also supply clinics. They will never taste the drugs meant for their Nigerian workers. We are not pushing them out of the country, but we want them to know that what they have done is wrong and NAFDAC will not leave them to just go unpunished. The company they sold some of these fake drugs to are already known to us. We will ensure they stop such barbaric act in Nigeria".

Although Akunyili did not disclose how much the construction company would be fined at the end of the day, she promised that the agency's searchlight would be beamed at other multinational companies in the country, which, she said, were in the habit of discriminating against their Nigerian workers, especially in food and drugs.

"We have heard series of reports that some other multinationals in the country are in the habit of maltreating their Nigerian workers, especially in food and drug. We will ensure they pay for their sin, if we eventually catch any one of them in such evil habit. Discriminative dispensing is a grievous offence in Nigeria. Why would people working and enjoying the goodwill of the people in the country still deem it fit to discriminate against Nigerian workers in drug and food administration".

The NAFDAC boss said joints efforts were being made by West African leaders and some other African leaders to wage war against fake and adulterated drugs in the sub-region.

She disclosed that since Nigeria has been a hot place for these criminals, they had moved en-masse to neighbouring countries for an easy and smooth operations.

"Our meeting in Abuja early this year was solely on how to wipe out the scourge of fake and adulterated drugs from the sub-region. Fakers are now finding it very difficult to operate anywhere in these countries that made up West Africa and even in other African countries.

The DG therefore called on Nigerian not to relent in their efforts in reporting anyone involved in faking and adulterating drugs or food, as well as importers of such into the country. "With your total support, we will in no time, totally wipe out fakers from the country and its environs.
