THE nation's moribund vehicle assembly business may soon be revived, courtesy of an investment elixir from China, which is currently emerging Nigeria's top economic ally.

Specifically, the Far East Asian country has concluded arrangements to establish an automobile assembly plant in Lagos to roll out Chinese vehicles for the first time in this part of the world.

The plant is to be established by the administration of the technologically renowned Chinese town of Henan, is set to be put up soon. The Henan Province is said to provide over 40 countries in the world with vehicles.

Deputy-Governor of Henan province in China, Mr. S. U. Zhongjin, who unveiled this plan in Abuja said President Olusegun Obasanjo has already allocated land around the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex for the purpose.

The Chinese envoy spoke when the Minister of Commerce, Ambassador Idris Waziri hosted a Chinese delegation to an investment forum. The forum was part of programmes marking the coming of the country's president to Nigeria.

"We are ready to do business with Nigerian people and we are going to deliver the first set soon," he said.

According to him, only last year, they provided over 300,000 and 200,000 tonnes of ethanol respectively and expressed the willingness of his people to invest in ethanol in Nigeria.

He further disclosed that they need about 30,000 hectares of land for cassava production in Nigeria.

Zhongjin also hinted that he has not only come to Nigeria with investors from his country but also brought four construction companies to Nigeria.

He also spoke of the presence of clinical and research doctors in the delegation who were in the country to see how to produce drugs for the country.

Zhongjin who said among the delegation were 33 from the private sector and 10 from government, added that they are out for serious business with Nigeria.

Henan is the largest province in China and the largest in economic sphere.
