The Ajaokuta Steel Rolling Complex went up in flames at the weekend. The fire was said to have started at the wire/rod mill and was reportedly caused by unstable electrical voltage at the Underground.

The inferno was said to have lasted for several hours before it was put out by men of the fire service. The Kogi State governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, rushed to the complex to assess the extent of damage.

Conducting the governor and his entourage round the company, the Operations Manager, Mr. Mike Amaduaka, stated that the fire was noticed when the power supply at the wire/rod mill showed high voltage and later low voltage, after which fire broke out, adding that the inferno did not affect production.

The company’s Managing Director, Engineer N. Verma, stated that the energy project would soon be intensified to improve the power supply to Lokoja, the state capital, stressing that Okene was already enjoying the improved power supply.

Governor Idris, who thanked God for rescuing the company from the fire disaster, stated that his love for the company informed the prompt release of state fire services to put out the inferno.

The governor also appealed to the managing director to intensity efforts at improving power supply to Lokoja, stressing that the improved power supply would boost the industrialisation of the state.

Governor Idris stated that his government was ready to give free land to interested investors coming to the state or Ajaokuta area to establish industries.
