Does Nigeria have an identity?

Does Nigeria have an identity?

AS a people, we are gullible, too gullible! And it is believed in some quarters that this is one of the reasons we have remained backwards.

Ironically, the highly educated ones amongst us are the worst offenders. They are usually the first to swallow hook, line and sinker, everything from the more developed societies, especially the West. Many of them don't see anything wrong in wearing a coat and a tie in the sweltering heat.

Though it is a most clumsy thing to do, some of them find joy in eating rice with a knife and fork when in highbrow restaurants.

Also among them are to be found men who would open a car door for a woman who is neither very sick nor deformed. Most of their nuances are a delight to comedians.

Excerpt from a Vanguard story titled Shocked By Scholars by Richard. Maduku.
AS a people, we are gullible, too gullible! And it is believed in some quarters that this is one of the reasons we have remained backwards.
From personal experience, most Nigerians don't have a go-getter, standup-for-your-right type attitude.

A handful of leaders have been raping the country of its resources for decades, and nobody says a word. We keep electing the same politicians on the basis of religion, tribal affiliations, etc, rather than base our decision on the candidates potential to make Nigeria a better place.

If that is what is meant by gullible in the above statement, then I'm in support of the view.
Ironically, the highly educated ones amongst us are the worst offenders. Is Nigeria the only nation on earth that observes this kind of practice? If wearing a tie in hot weather is universal, then why indict Nigerians for doing it?

What about a policeman who wears heavy black khaki in the summer sun? Does he deserve to be criticised too?

I must say I understand what the author is alluding to. Basically, rather than bear a blind allegiance to a foreign culture, we rather should conduct our affairs in a manner practical for our local environment.

In general, I'm of the opinion that a uniform sets someone in an official capacity apart from someone on vacation. And a uniform could be an official in a tie, or a law enforcement agent in heavy dark cloting.
Though it is a most clumsy thing to do, some of them find joy in eating rice with a knife and fork when in highbrow restaurants.
I agree. It's simply a lot easier to eat rice with a spoon.

But have you given any thought to how you'd eat your meat? That is where a fork and a knife comes in. You have better control over your meat armed with a fork and a knife, than with a spoon. Perhaps that is the reason some people simply eat rice with a fork and a knife, to keep from having to change cutleries every few seconds.
Also among them are to be found men who would open a car door for a woman who is neither very sick nor deformed. Most of their nuances are a delight to comedians.
Opening a door for a woman is considered common curtesy, good manners. It really doesn't matter if you're doing it for a woman or a man.

Nigeria is a male-dominated society. Hence, these kinds of display of affection toward women are viewed as comical.
