Miss Iraq: Queen of Infidels

“Maybe beauty is the final step to end violence and preach world peace after all. Those were the words of Tamar Goregian, a 23-year-old Iraqi woman who had just won the title of Miss Iraq 2006 and was hoping to travel to Los Angeles to take part in the Miss Universe competition in July.

Unfortunately, those hopeful words turned out to be unprophetic as four days later Ms. Goregian was forced to renounce her crown and flee the country after receiving death threats and being branded the “Queen of Infidels. It would seem that Muslim fundamentalists aren’t exactly keen on the immodest Western tradition of making a show of feminine beauty.

That should have come as no surprise given what happened in Nigeria in 2002. That was to be the sight of the Miss World competition that year. There was controversy to begin with because a Nigerian woman had been sentenced to death by stoning for adultery and some of the Miss World contestants understandably wanted to know why in holy hell the contest was being held in such a country.

On the other hand, Muslim fundamentalists in Nigeria were asking the same question, but for different reasons. Islam demands virtue of its adherents and virtue, in the minds of fundamentalists, is incompatible with the flaunting of female beauty. But apparently requirements of virtue do not preclude rioting and murder.

When a local journalist made the comment that if Muhammad were still around he would probably have chosen a wife from among the beauty contestants, that was all the excuse needed by Muslim fanatics to run amok. Over 200 people ended up dead and the contest was moved back to civilization in London.

Iraq isn’t Nigeria and it‘s not governed by Sharia law, but neither is it the Middle Eastern center of open-mindedness and tolerance. It’s a country where wack job insurgents have no qualms about blowing up school children and beheading infidels, all in the name of Islam. That they don’t like beauty contests is about as unexpected as the local sandstorm season.

Sure, somebody probably pointed out that if they didn’t have the Miss Iraq contest for fear of giving offense, then the terrorists win. Unfortunately, when Miss Iraq has to flee the country because of death threats, the terrorists have won.
