As part of efforts to ensure productivity and enhanced service delivery, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has embarked on the re-posting of some its workers nationwide.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that the action was designed to move around some of the workers, who have stayed for ``too long'' in their present area of duty, as well as reposition them for greater efficiency.

A competent source at the FAAN headquarters, told NAN in Abuja today, that the movement, which involved middle-level and senior cadre staff, would also cut across all the departments in the organisation.

"Already some of the workers have started handing over to those taking over from them,
while others are making efforts to move to their new stations," the source said.

It also said the realignment of the work-force was part of the ongoing restructuring exercise in the country's aviation sector to conform with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards and ensure optimal performance.

"For your information, FAAN is being repositioned, as part of the federal government's reform agenda, to ensure better service delivery. So that is whywe are transferring our personnel and also retraining others," the source told NAN.

It said "It will be recalled that President Olusegun Obasanjo had in October, last year approved the implementation of recommendations to professionalise the organisation following a manpower audit exercise.''

"The audit identified the manpower levels required to refocus the parastatal organisation for efficient and cost-effective service delivery,'' it added.

NAN learnt that the restructuring involved the drawing up of a new organisational structure, recommended manning levels, the establishment of a new Directorate of Aviation Security and Safety and the appointment of experts as departmental heads.

Already, the development had swept away the erstwhile Managing Director, Alhaji Gambo Umar, and some directors, as well as other workers in the organisation.

The Aviation Minister, Prof. Babalola Borishade, had recently warned airport managers against corruption, noting that "EFCC has been invited to the aviation industry because of the high level of corruption there."

He urged the airport managers to evolve new work ethics that would promote efficiency in their daily activities, warning that the era of shoddy business at FAAN was over.

He said government would not tolerate excuses for non-performance, adding that it had done enough to enhance performance.

NAN reports that FAAN, formerly Nigerian Airports Authority (NAA) was established in 1996 to develop, provide and maintain airports and other facilities for air operations within the Nigerian airspace.

It controls airports located in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Calabar, Enugu, Maiduguri, Jos, Yola, Benin, Sokoto, Ibadan, Ilorin, Ibadan, Akure, Katsina, Minna, Makurdi and Bauchi.Four of them, located in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt are international airports.
