FAAN Clamps Down On Customs Agents

Postby Richard Akindele » Sat Jul 22, 2006 2:13 pm

COMMERCIAL activities at the cargo section of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos were yesterday disrupted for hours, following restriction of movement placed on customs clearing agents by Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

Also affected was traffic on the airport's road as hundreds of commuters were left stranded.

Daily Champion gathered that movement into the cargo section, normally a beehive of commercial activities, was restricted as early as 7.00 a.m by a detachment of policemen deployed by FAAN to check unauthorised movements into the area.

FAAN's General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mr Adeniyi Ajakaiye, who spoke with journalists on the issue, said the action was taken by the authority to streamline movement into the cargo section of Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO).

According to him, "FAAN took the measure to check illegal entrance and need for identification of persons doing business in the cargo section."

He added that such a step became necessary as some of the agents, operating in the section indulge in illegal activities.

Ajakaiye, further said the action is part of conditions that will ensure that Nigeria passes forthcoming safety audit of the aviation industry by International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Decrying the resistance of positive changes by some of the clearing agents, the FAAN's spokesman said that the authority is poised to sanitize business activities in the cargo section and will not condone illegality.

Meanwhile, spokesman of the agents, Mr Emma Njoku blamed FAAN for the disruption of business in the section, saying that the authority had delayed in issuing On Duty Card (ODC) paid for by the agents.
