Nigerian Railways Rehab committee has two weeks ultimatum

Postby Richard Akindele » Wed May 03, 2006 1:59 pm

The Federal Government has given the committee handling rehabilitation of the Nigerian Railways up till middle of May to finalise work on the various submissions and specifications in connection with the resuscitation of the railway system.

The committee comprised three project teams, Ministerial Project team, NRC supervisory team, and Sectoral Project Management team.

The Ministerial project team is headed by the Minister for Transport, Dr Abiye Sekibo with Minister of State for Transport, Permanent Secretary, Chairman (NRC), Director Land Transport and Managing Director of NRC as members.

Members of the project supervisory team are made up of five engineers each from the transport ministry NRC, while the sectoral project team are grouped into track rehabilitation works, safety and security, telecommunication/signalling, engineering procurement, new lines project team and rehabilitation of locomotives and rolling stock teams.

According to office of the Director of Land Transport, Dr Tunji Bolade, the project team is expected to work with the Ministry’s project consultant, Messrs TEAM Nigeria Ltd, “to analyse all varying submissions and give specifications needed for the railway system, within the next two weeks."

In an apparent effort to get the railway rehabilitation process moving, the Ministry is now making use of its internal manpower capacity to drive the project.

The source quoted Sekibo as saying that the President has agreed to provide substantial funds for rehabilitation within the next 18 months.

Sekibo, who described the Federal Government’s commitment as “the largest single infusion of funds since the colonial era, urged the engineers to buy into the administration’s anti-corruption policy and pursue rehabilitation work with selfless zeal for the benefit of all Nigerians.

He charged the engineers not to disappoint the country, warning that severe punitive measures would be meted out to any individual who fail to deliver high standards.
