Nigeria blames bad weather for plane crashes

Postby Richard Akindele » Sun Apr 16, 2006 1:55 am

Preliminary reports on the two fatal plane crashes in the last quarter of 2005 have been blamed on adverse weather situation, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported on Saturday.

Nigeria's Aviation Minister Babalola Borishade was quoted as saying that "preliminary reports indicate that the two crashes were caused by heavy winds and other natural causes." The minister said preliminary reports were part of the highlights of investigations carried out by the Accident Investigations and Prevention Bureau (AIPB) of the ministry.

He also said that the final report of the "unfortunate mishaps" would be ready in the next two months, adding that the two planes involved in the crashes encountered sudden weather changes. Weather reports on the days of the accidents showed that there were heavy winds, thunder storms, lightening and showers.

The final report would be made available to the public, the airlines and the manufacturers of the two aircraft and makers of the engines, according to the minister.

On Oct. 22, 2005, a Bellview Airline's plane crashed in Lisa village, Ogun State, about 30 kilometers north of Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos, killing all 117 passengers and crew members on board.

Later on Dec. 10 last year, an Abuja-Port Harcourt bound Sosoliso flight crashed on landing at the Port Harcourt International Airport, killing 108 passengers and crew members. The two aircraft, Bellview's Boeing 737-200 and the DC-9 of Sosoliso Airlines, were written off due to the impact of the crashes.

Only the wreckage and other pieces of the aircraft were retrieved for the investigations by the AIPB and the US-based National Transport Safety Board (NTSB).

The black box of the Bellview's Boeing 737-200 was not found, while that of the Sosoliso aircraft was discovered.

The two crashes were described by Aviation Safety Network as the fifth and sixth tragic plane crashes in the history of aviation sector in Nigeria. Enditem
