THE involvement of majority of Diploma students of the University of Nigeria in cases of armed robbery, rape, students' cultism and other anti-social activities on the campuses of the university necessitated the ban on Diploma programmes by the authorities.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Chinedu Nebo said in order to reduce the rate of social vices in which Diploma students were involved, the university had to put an indefinite ban on Diploma programmes.

"We discovered that most of those engaged in cult activities, rape and armed robbery were mainly Diploma students and I said I will not run a campus like that.

When we discovered this, we decided to put off the programme. Today, we have peace on the campuses. The era of cultists and hoodlums terrorizing our students is gone," he said.

Nebo, however, said that the programmes may be revisited when university must have adopted the E-learning system in which case a student could stay in his home and take his lectures.

"We will start our Diploma programme again when we go100 percent E-learning. That is, you will stay in your home and learn. If you are a cultist or an armed robber you stay at your home and do it; but don't come to our campus to do it. You can get a laptop or go to a business centre, bend down, take your lectures in your bedroom and don't come to the university to terrorize our students," he said.

He said that in line with his determination to ensure academic excellence, the university had resolved to shift from abstract research and from ivory tower orientation to service delivery, which, informed its decision to partner with the Central Bank of Nigeria to establish entrepreneurial study centre on both campuses of the university.

The centre, he said, would promote entrepreneurial culture, self employment, economic independence and self actualization of the graduates, adding that the centre would offer educational programmes on entrepreneurship development for professionals and artisans in varied disciplines to gain knowledge and skills in managing Small and Medium Scale Enterprises.

Meanwhile, the university has launched a fund raising scheme tagged "UNRED FOUNDATION", which is aimed at mobilizing funds from both members of the university community and the large society for the development of various infrastructure and programmes of the institution.
