Seven registered opposition parties in Nigeria on Saturday were merged into a mega party called the Action Congress (AC) with a view to winning the 2007 general elections.

Alhaji Hassan Zurmi, national chairman of the newly-established party made the announcement of the formal national launch of the mega party at Eagle Square in the capital Abuja.

"The coming together of the seven parties is to give Nigerians good platform to elect credible leaders that would take over the reigns of government in 2007," Zurmi said.

The national chairman noted that the AC was the only party that could restore the country's good legacies, urging all to join hands and support the party in its bid.

He assured Nigerians that the AC, if elected into power in 2007, would ensure that it fulfilled all her election manifestoes.

According to chairman of the launch and former Alliance for Democracy (AD) governor of Ogun state, Chief Olusegun Osoba, the AC "is ready to take over power in 2007 elections democratically."

Osoba urged Nigerians to police their votes and insist on the usage of modified open-secret ballot system where elections would take place simultaneously nationwide.

At the mega party launch ceremony, former foreign affairs minister Tom Ikimi said Nigeria had been yearning for a birth of a mega party capable of wrestling power from the ruling PDP.

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Ghali Na'abba said the launch of the AC "is a testimony to the failure of other parties, assuring that AC would give the nation the best."

Presenting the manifesto of the party, former national chairman of the PDP Audu Ogbeh said the party stand for justice, peace and progress.

"Our mission statement is to build a party driven by issues and the highest moral standards, respect for the rule of law as well as pursuit of happiness, eradication of poverty, rapid economic growth, social development and security of life and property for all Nigerians," he said.

Ogbeh noted that the core values of the party was restoring integrity to the electoral process, massive job creation, affordable health care, youth and women empowerment.
