PDP Female Presidential Aspirant Emerges

Postby Richard Akindele » Mon Aug 21, 2006 4:54 pm

In what appeared a radical twist in the count down to 2007 presidential elections, a female aspirant and Nigeria's first woman Ambassador to Germany, Chief Elizabeth Ogbon-Day at the weekend declared interest in the nation's topmost job, even as she described her administration's key focus as security, equity and justice.

Ogbon-Day who declared her interest in the presidency during a courtesy call at THISDAY's corporate office in Apapa, Lagos State however described herself as a home-made product and as such, understands the problems of the average Nigerian.

The presidential aspirant claimed to be the first woman ambassador to Germany and later, the Philippines, during the regime of former President Shehu Shagari.

Justifying why she settled for the nation's number one seat, Ogbon-Day said the worrisome state of the people was the drive for her aspiration and that as a mother who wants the best for her children, she is determined to bring back smiles on the faces of the Nigerian people.

Though she claimed to have declared her ambition since April 20, 2006, but she is still to formally launch her campaign, a programme she intends to unveil soon at the nation's capital.

While acknowledging that the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration has since 1999 put up its best, she however lamented the conditon of the Nigerian people, some of whom she said still eat from the trash.

Citing a real life experience, Ogbon-Day told of a neigbhour who goes around fast food centres to get waste food for her dog, and that some other neigbours would still not allow the dog eat as they would join the dog in eating the waste from fast food centres.

She said such is the typical experience of an average Nigerian, yet the situation gets worse by the day. She however noted that she was prepared to redress the situation, adding that, not only does she have experience, competence and exposure, but the emotional conviction to get it done.

Asked if the current agitation by the North for power-shift would not affect her dreams, Ogbon-Day said while she would continue to maintain the spirit of one Nigeria, she would not however give in to injustice and equity which is the basis of such agitation.

According to her, if power must go round and some parts of the country have had their share, then those other parts that have not had such opportunity should be allowed to in the spirit of equity, justice and fairness, stressing that the South-south has a right to produce the next president of Nigeria.

She however expressed optimism in the support and encouragement received so far from people and the fact that her campaigns have taken off in earnest. She said the formal launch of the campaign would hold soon in Abuja, the nation's capital.
