Police will crack down on all kinds of political party thugs in the general elections in early 2007, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported on Saturday.
Inspector-General of Police Sunday Ehindero was quoted as saying that the police force would "clamp down on political party thugs in the 2007 elections."
Speaking at a dinner organized for graduating cadet assistant superintendents and cadet inspectors at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, near Kano at the weekend, Ehindero stressed that the police would ensure peace during electioneering campaign and election proper.
According to him, the police would not allow thugs to disturb the peace ahead of the 2007 elections.
Ehindero said the police was determined to maintain law and order during the polls proper.
The inspector-general of police also counseled "employers of thugs" to check their activities, as they too would not be spared if the thugs disturbed the peace.
To the graduating officers, Ehindero urged them to shun corruption and work hard and honestly throughout their career.
