MEND's Abuja bombings

MEND's Abuja bombings

Postby Richard Akindele » Sat Oct 02, 2010 2:59 pm

Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of this independence day.

Unfortunately, not everybody sees this as a happy event. Rebels of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) decided to show Nigeria that this wasn't worthy of celebrating by launching multiple bomb blasts in the capital city, Abuja.

The nucleus of this guerrilla campaign, MEND has been fighting for the Delta people, who have been neglected forever. In the past, MEND's leader, Ken Sarowiwa was assassinated, in a bid to silence the people.

Unfortunately, tyranny from the government toward the people cannot bear fruit, as long as the people have nothing to lose. When you push a person to the wall, he will turn and face you, no matter how intimidating you are to that person.

In Britain, the IRA also waged this kind of bombing campaign for a long time to protest the Protestant treatment of Catholics in Northern Ireland.

In the end, the British government gave in and reached a truce, after thousands of casualties. Why didn't the government nip it in the bud, and reach this truce decades before?

Former president Yar' Adua made a move to reach out to MEND about renouncing violence. What happened to that effort?

I'm baffled as to why Nigeria is so incapable of doing things right. Take Alaska in the USA for instance. The state has an abundance of oil resources. Because of that, the state writes a cheque ($1,000 - $3,000) to its residents each year. This is the same thing Nigeria should be doing with the Delta people.

I just hope these kinds of bombings from the Delta criminals doesn't escalate. Otherwise, Abuja would become paralyzed, driving International entities away.
