The battle of wits between the Nigerian Presidency and Plateau State governor, Chief Joshua Dariye, reached a new height at the weekend as the former declared that the governor would soon be arrested and shipped back to the United Kingdom to face charges of money laundering and bail jumping.

The declaration was made just as the government of Plateau State described the Deputy Senate President, Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu, as a national embarrassment following his alleged involvement in the diversion of 2006 Hajj funds by the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Mantu who is currently being threatened with impeachment in the Senate over the case is the arrowhead of the Presidency’s attack on Governor Dariye.

In his declaration, President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Femi Fani-Kayode, said in Abuja that Dariye disgraced the people and government of Nigeria when he jumped bail in the United Kingdom and allegedly returned home with a fake Ghanaian passport.

The offences, he said, would keep the governor in jail for several decades.

“He is an utter disgrace to his people and to Nigeria because whether he likes it or not, he will go down in the history of this country as the first governor who disgracefully jumped bail from a foreign country after he stole his state money and came running back to Nigeria with his tail in between his legs and with a fake Ghanaian passport.

“Let him be rest assured that at the end of all these, when he no longer has immunity, he will be arrested, caged, put in chains and shipped back to the UK to face very serious charges of theft, money laundering, fraud and jumping bail, Fani-Kayode stated.

He further asserted that President Obasanjo held Dariye in utter contempt as a result of the sundry offences over which the governor has been in trouble and that the next decade would see him spending time in prison, both in Nigeria and in the U.K.

In his words: “The truth is that Mr. President and all of us, the federal government, have absolute contempt for rogues like him and I repeat that as far as we are concerned, he is not only a leper and outcast but also an utter disgrace to the exalted office of a state governor, which he occupies and a disgrace to the people of Plateau State and Nigeria.

Reacting to scathing comments about him made by Dariye’s aide during the week, Fani-Kayode, who said there were many other good governors in Nigeria, insisted that Dariye deserved no respect after allegedly stealing public funds.

“Dariye is a classic example of a bad apple governor and consequently, I do not feel obliged to treat him with any restraint, gentility and respect.

The presidential aide added: “When he is convicted, the likelihood is that he will spend the next few decades of his life in jail.

Meanwhile, as some senators continue with their political strategy to get the Deputy Senate President, Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu impeached over his alleged involvement in the diversion of 2006 Hajj money, an allegation made by the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Chief of Staff to Governor of Plateau State, Mr.Alexander Molwus, has pleaded with the Senate and Nigerians in general to forgive the people of Plateau for giving them a “bad product.

In an exclusive interview with Sunday Independent, Mr. Molwus who was prevailed upon in 2003 to step down for Senator Mantu in the senatorial election, described him (Mantu) as “a rotten and bad product which the people of Plateau State regretted giving to Nigerians as senator and Deputy Senate President.

In his words: “We know Mantu very well; in 2003, the people of Plateau State protested the re-nomination of Mantu for 2003 election; Governor Joshua Dariye wanted to act according to the will of the people but President Olusegun Obasanjo pleaded with Governor Dariye to appeal to his people to accept Mantu. That was how Mantu found his way back to the Senate; we never wanted him back.

Mr. Molwus, who was one of the founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State and now a strong member of the Advance Congress of Democrats (ACD) described the current political activities of Mantu in the Senate as a “national embarrassment not only to the people of his state but the nation as a whole.

He added: “We are not disappointed at all about the activities of Mantu; the people of Plateau State, see him as a politician that cannot be trusted, an opportunist who is after his pocket, and somebody who is insensitive to the feelings of his people. That is why we want him recalled from the Senate.

A top confidant of Governor Dariye, Molwus said contrary to Mantu’s strong support for the third term agenda, the people of Plateau State are vehemently against elogation of tenure for Obasanjo by any means.

“Governor Dariye and our people are strongly against third term for Obasanjo and that is our sin against Obasanjo; that is why we are being persecuted today by the power-that-be in Abuja; but no matter the intimidation, we will never support third term for Obasanjo, he stated.
