President Yar'Adua, let me get this right... So in a nation like Nigeria, where power supply is so so, where people are malnourished, where the schools are falling apart, where good medical care is only for the affluent who can travel abroad, where tribes don't get along, where religious clashes are rampant, where government corruption is up to the wazoo, the one thing that caught your attention is a little horror movie?

How about solving real problems facing the nation?

I laud your effort to push for a good image for Nigeria. But how about starting with 419 advance fee fraud? You would agree with me that 419 has deeply ruined Nigeria's image around the world. What have you done to reverse that bad image?

Child trafficking for the purpose of prostitution is a huge problem today in Nigeria. How about tackling that problem?

Only a leader with a lot of time on his hands would be bothered by a movie. Are there any other horror movies you've seen that depict Americans as cannibals? Does that then mean that Americans are really cannibals? Does the world have the ability to separate fiction from reality?

So what good would it do if you ban the movie locally? Would that keep people around the world from seeing that movie?

Finally, why follow in the footsteps of rogue nations like China and Iran? These are closed societies that oppress their own people. Iran and China ban everything in sight. Citizens of those countries live under tyrannical governments. With that in mind, why would Nigeria's president want to hold them up as an epitome of morality in the world?

President Yar'Adua, please get on to doing the people's work. Nobody cares about some horror movie. Every movie is rated in some manner. So let those who want to watch it do so. Our society is behind the times as it is. We don't need to compound the problem by banning books and movies, and whatever else we find objectionable.

Information Minister Dora Akunyili said the government told the Nigerian Film and Video Censor Board to ensure "District 9" was no longer shown in movie theatres, and to confiscate copies. It has also written to the producers telling them to edit out references to Nigeria.

This is yet another example of how Nigeria employs the wrong solutions to problems. What is the minister hoping to achieve by clamping down on Nigerian movie theatres?

In this day and age, anybody can get any movie. Unless of course, you start to open every package that comes into the country, and also ultimately make the Internet illegal.

I just don't think this is the best use of the minister's time. If you really want to clean up Nigeria's image, start by scapegoating 419ers. 419 fraud has been the single most devastating culprit in the negative way Nigeria is viewed around the world.

It's extremely easy to catch these 419ers. Catching them, and plaster the information all over foreign media.

By Nigeria not doing anything about its fraudsters, it invariably sanctions 419 activity.

If the honorable minister wants ideas on steps to take, I'd gladly help. There are hi-tech ways to achieve goals.
