Galadima Wants Eguavoen Excluded From Sambawa's Axe

Although Nigeria Football Association (NFA) Chairman Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima is fully in support of the Sports Minister Dr. Seidu Sambawa's decision to nullify Fanny Amun's national team appointments, he, however, insists that Austin Eguavoen should be allowed to continue as Super Eagles coach.

In his first comments on the action taken by the Minister Monday, Galadima said he was fully in support of allowing qualified coaches to apply for national team jobs as it was in line with 'due process', which he has always advocated.

"There is absolutely nothing wrong in the Minister asking coaches to apply for jobs with the national teams as it would ensure that only the best eventually get employed, which would also rub off on the quality of the teams the coaches handle.

"However, I will like to point out that the position of Eguavoen will not be affected because he already has an existing contract with the FA. Besides he had so far done a good job and with the Nations Cup qualifiers just around the corner I think it is best he remains in charge of the Eagles," the FA Chairman said on phone from Kano.

He, however, had only caustic words for acting FA scribe Fanny Amun insisting that he had carried out an illegal act by appointing coaches last month because he was no longer his association's acting secretary.

"I've repeatedly said that Amun is no longer our acting scribe. FIFA has been notified and have deleted his name from their website. So for him to go ahead to use the FA's letterhead to make the announcement was an illegal act. Apart from this even if he was still acting he has no right to make such changes only the Board has that right through its technical committee."

Galadima said the committee was expected to submit its report on the coaches before the week runs out for the Board to deliberate and take action on.

Sambawa's Special Assistant (technical) Alhassan Yakmut had made the Minister's position on the coaches known on Monday saying that it would affect all the sporting associations under the ministry.

Meanwhile, FIFA has invited Galadima to attend the FIFA Congress, which will hold a few days to the kick off of the World Cup in Germany this summer.

Already the world governing body has sent tickets to the FA Chairman.

However, while FIFA made provision for three of them - Galadima, head of the International Department and the Secretary General, unless this position is filled before then, only the two other officials will make the journey to Germany.
