Nigeria has failed in its bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations for 2010. The Executive Committee of the African Football Confederation (CAF), at their meeting in Cairo on 4 September awarded hosting rights of the biennial tournament to Angola.
Nigeria was seeking to organize the tournament for the third time after previously hosting in 1980 and as co-host in 2000.
But as a form of consolation, CAF has promised to support Nigeria?s bid to host the World U-17 Championship in 2009, which FIFA has already allocated to Africa. The country also stands a chance to host the Nations Cup in 2012 or 2014 if any of the countries awarded the rights fail to meet up.
In summary, the CAF Executive Committee unanimously awarded hosting rights of subsequent Nations Cup tournaments in the following order:
2010 ? ANGOLA
2012 ? GABON/EQUATORIAL GUINEA
2014 ?LIBYA
