Ukrainian Club Ejects Eyimofe, Ojobo

Postby Richard Akindele » Wed Jul 19, 2006 3:09 pm

The ensuing saga between Ukrainian club Mettalurh Donetsk and their Nigerian stars Joseph Eyimofe and Ochuko Ojobo has taken a dramatic turn with the team literally throwing out both players from the former Soviet Union state.

KICK OFF gathered that Eyimofe and Ojobo, who were signed mid-season were arrested by police on the 3 July and bundled into the next available flight back to Nigeria.

It was the climax of several weeks of a raging dispute between the players' London-based manager David Omigie and Mettalurh.

According to Omigie, the club refused to honour their contractual agreements after a second medical revealed that Eyimofe had a heart defect similar to that of Nwankwo Kanu.

"We can understand if they decide not to have Eyimofe because of ill-health, but our argument that the boy is entitled to a full payment of his contractual dues fell on deaf ears," Omigie said.

"They also used Eyimofe's condition as an excuse to ignore the terms of contract for the two players which was to run till 2008."

Omigie disclosed that Mettalurh had agreed to pay both players a transfer fee of $80,000 each but refused to pay up after the disclosure of Eyimofe's health status.

It would be recalled that Eyimofe, a Nigerian junior ex-international, played two official games for Mettalurh before undergoing another medical, which revealed his heart defect.

Omigie has since petitioned world soccer governing body FIFA on behalf of the players.

This Day.
