N24m Fraud Rocks NFL

Alleged fraud running into over N24 million is rocking the Chief Oyuiki Obaseki-led Nigeria Football League (NFL)to its foundation. The matter has necessitated an emergency Board meeting scheduled for Abuja today.

The alleged financial discrepancies was said to have been perpetrated between January and April 21, this year.

A dependable source hinted that some members of the NFL who were not happy with the manner money was being spent without following due process, have called for an emergency Board meeting schedule for today.

According to the source, the explanations volunteered on how the money was spent was as annoying as the money that was squandered.

"There were lots of inconsistencies in the explanation given on how the money was spent. How can an establishment like the NFL spend as much as almost N1 million on computer work within a month? Even the soccer governing body, FIFA will not spend that much on computer work in a month if their account would be made available to the public.

"Since the explanations offered on how the money was spent were not satisfactory enough, the financial recklessness on the NFL would be tabled before the Board in the meeting scheduled for Tuesday. This is not an issue for an individual to tackle", the source said in an exclusive chat.

The source maintained that the money was not part of the payment of match officials' indemnity in the three week-old league.

He also indicated that the staffers of the NFL were being owed four months salary and yet the NFL embarked on a spending spree.

Executive Secretary of the NFL, Mallam Salihu Abubakar could not be reached for comment on the issue, but the chairman, Chief Obaseki would not volunteer any statement. Instead, he said the issue would be discussed in the Board meeting scheduled for Tuesday.

"My dear young man, I have nothing to say on the issues you've raised. Wait till tomorrow (today) when the NFL Board would meet. I believe the issue would be discussed and decision taken", were all Chief Oyuki Obaseki said when contacted.
