What is License Plate Recognition?

This is an automated system that is setup to read a vehicles license plates and compare it to data in a database. If there's a match, then some action is taken.

This technology is used a lot at security gates. So, instead of paying a gatekeeper to sit by the gate and manually verify vehicles coming through, this system opens the gate for license plates determined to be in the local database.

Just another way by which technology is putting ordinary folks out of their jobs. But, guess what, it's efficient, it's on the job 24/7, and can be used in many different situations, and in any weather. It never comes late to work, it never needs a vacation, it can determine if that car is reported stolen, it knows if the car has unpaid tickets, it knows if the registration is expired/about to expire, etc. These things would take a human a lot of time to carry out, but the computer does it in a split second.

But what happens if the computer that runs this thing goes down, or malfunctions? Well, you just have to make sure it doesn't, just ensure that you have hardware redundancy like web servers do.
