ISLAMABAD (Balochistan Times) -- The National Database and Registration Authority National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has won a US $1 million contract to develop National Identity Management System for the Nigerian Government. The project for National Identity Management Commission, Office of the President, Government of Nigeria was competed by renowned foreign IT firms. NADRA was awarded the contract after a competitive bidding process in which the Identity Management System Integrators of US, France, Germany, UK and Indian companies were competing. A contract in this regard was signed in a prestigious ceremony held in Abuja, Nigeria between Deputy Chairman NADRA Tariq Malik and Chris E. Onyemenam, Director General and CEO of National Identity Management Commission, Office of the President of Nigeria, says a fax message received here Friday. The NADRA will help Nigeria to produce the computerized national identity cards for Nigerian citizens. Tariq Malik, Deputy Chairman, NADRA, after signing the contract termed it a smart investment of the government of Nigeria in its effort to empower its citizens. You are building systems and infrastructures that are instrumental, interconnected and intelligent. These systems not only repair what existed, but also develop the future things, Pakistanis are proud to be your partners in this journey to future, a fax message quoted Malik as saying. Chris E. Onyemenam, Director General and CEO of National Identity Management Commission, Office of the President of Nigeria said NADRA has earned this success and you have every reason to be proud. We are looking forward to work with our Pakistani brothers on this project. NADRA is rated among top 15 companies in the world (by ID WORLD - an Italian based body that ranks ID Management System Integrators). NADRA has produced 72 million ID cards for its citizens and has the largest biometrics citizen database in the world with more than 100 million biometrics records. NADRA expertise in IT solution has earned international acclaim and international projects were awarded to it including Government of Sudan Civil Registration Project, Government of Kenya Passport Issuing System, Government of Bangladesh High Security Drivers License and Afghan Refugee Registration Project for UNHCR.

I find it peculiar why it is that each time Nigeria needs to have something significant done, it almost always employs the services of foreign firms.

There are hundreds of thousands of highly talented Nigerians living abroad, who could handle many of these kinds of projects. Rather than empower our own, we rather run to outside entities, who end up using the money to build their own nations.

Nigerians are the single most educated group in the USA. I'm calling on Nigeria to please use this untapped talent pool. Empower your own. Empower your own pleeeeease! Thank you.
