Saturday, December 18, 2010; 11:37 AM

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria -- In the dusty streets of northeastern Nigeria, far from the battlegrounds of Afghanistan, a group known as the Nigerian Taliban is waging war against a government it refuses to recognize.

The radical Muslim sect called Boko Haram was thought to be vanquished in 2009, when Nigeria's military crushed its mosque into concrete shards, and its leader was arrested and died in police custody. But now, a year later, Maiduguri and surrounding villages again live in fear of the group, whose members have assassinated police and local leaders and engineered a massive prison break, officials say.

Western diplomats are concerned that the sect is catching the attention of al-Qaida's North Africa branch. They also worry that Boko Haram represents chaos and disintegration in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation and one of the top suppliers of crude oil to the United States.

"It is possible that Nigeria could be a future Pakistan," a leaked cable released by the WikiLeaks website quotes U.S. Assistant Secretary of African Affairs Johnnie Carson as saying earlier this year. "In 25 years, there could be impoverished masses, a wealthy elite and radicalism in the north. The question is whether the oil wells will be dry as well."

The cable later adds: "Nigeria is at a critical financial and political threshold and the entire nation could possibly tip backwards permanently."

---

Maiduguri sits in the upper northeast reaches of Nigeria, about 1,040 miles (1,675 kilometers) away from the country's commercial capital and seaport of Lagos. The sun rises as early as 6 a.m., quickly scorching the dusty streets and lands slowly being taken over by the growing Sahara Desert.

It was here a decade ago where Mohammed Yusuf, a one-time moderate imam, began preaching against the practices of Western education in life across Nigeria's Muslim north. Boko Haram was a constant refrain in the Hausa-language sermons, meaning "Western education is sacrilege."

Yusuf's words came at a time when about a dozen northern states adopted Islamic Shariah law, in the wake of the country becoming a democracy after decades of military dictatorships. Many believed the law, a code of conduct based on the teachings of the Quran, would end the corruption that gripped the country's government.

However, the Shariah courts remained under the control of secular state governments, which pushed them into roles of directing traffic and stopping beer trucks. Government continued as always, with politicians driving black luxury Land Rovers, and one trader boasted a mansion built for about $100 million, complete with a room plated in gold. In the meantime, more than 80 percent of the country's 150 million people lived on less than $2 a day.

"People are living in absolute poverty," said Ibrahim Ahmed Abdullahi, an imam in Maiduguri. "Whenever people are living in this type of poverty, if you start saying to them, 'Look, come let us bring about change,' ... people must listen to you."

University graduates who joined Boko Haram tore up their diplomas. Others joined riots in 2007 attacking police stations. Yusuf's preaching became even more incendiary.

I believe sooner or later, Nigeria is going to have to be broken up. Nigeria is a seriously balkanized country. The different groups are too married to their own ideologies, and too much against the believes of other groups, that I do not see how Nigerians could ever get along.

So long as Muslims believe that Christians don't deserve to live,
so long as Hausas predominantly cast votes for fellow tribespersons, and Yorubas and Igbos for Yoruba and Igbo candidates respectively, I see no end to the incessant unrest that Nigeria is facing.

I'm on Gaddafi's corner on this one. The funny aspect of all this, is that Nigeria decides to pull it's ambassador from Libya, but nobody among the leaders has yet offered any solution to the prevailing violent clashes that waste hundreds of innocent lives.

We can sweep Nigeria's problems under the rug all we want, but nothing short of a real solution, like what Gaddafi is proposing, is going to resolve Nigeria's problems.

Only smart thinkers can pull Nigeria out of the predicament it finds itself in. So far, the current crop of leaders only respond to things in a knee-jerk fashion. They do not have a real solution to problems.

In a strongly worded statement, Nigerian Foreign Ministry said it was recalling its ambassador because the "irresponsible utterances of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, his theatrics and grandstanding at every auspicious occasion have become too numerous to recount."

The Foreign Ministry said in the statement that Abuja welcomes "well-meaning comments from concerned members of the international community," adding that the "sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria are sacrosanct and non-negotiable."

The statement read out by Foreign ministry spokesman Ozo Nwobu described the Libyan leader's comments as "unacceptable and unbecoming of any leader who claims to advocate and champion the cause of African integration and unity."

Earlier, Gaddafi addressing African students in Tripoli on Wednesday said a radical solution was required to halt the frequent sectarian violence in Nigeria as it was a "deep-rooted conflict of a religious nature."

Gaddafi proposed dividing Nigeria into a Christian state in the south and a Muslim state in the north and share the country's oil and other natural wealth in a peaceful manner, citing the post-independence partition of India and Pakistan in 1947 as an example.

Stressing that such a move in lines of the India-Pakistan partition could benefit Nigeria, Gaddafi proposed that the Christian south could could have Lagos as its capital while the Muslim north took Abuja as its premier city.

Gaddafi's comments came just days after over 200 people, mostly Christians, were killed in a sectarian attack on villages in the suburbs of Jos last week. The perpetrators of that attack are suspected to be Muslims from the Fulani group and the attack appeared to be in retaliation to the slaughter of some 400 Muslims in the villages around Jos in January.

Such periodic outbursts of religious violence are frequent in Nigeria, the northern regions of which are predominantly Muslim with the South being dominated by Christians. The city of Jos lies in Nigeria's volatile Middle Belt, where the majority of the population either follow traditional religions or are Christians.

While some 700 people were killed in clashes between Muslims and Christians in Jos during 2004, rioting in September 2001 left at least 1,000 dead in the central Nigerian city. Over 500 others were killed in a similar outburst of religious violence in the city in November 2008.

2000 - Thousands killed in northern Nigeria as non-Muslims opposed to the introduction of Islamic sharia law fight Muslims who demand its implementation in the northern state of Kaduna.

Sept. 2001 - Christian-Muslim violence flares after Muslim prayers in Jos, with churches and mosques set on fire. At least 1,000 people are killed, according to a Sept. 2002 report by a panel set up by Plateau state government.

Nov. 2002 - Nigeria abandons the Miss World contest in Abuja. The decision follows the death of at least 216 people in rioting in the northern city of Kaduna after a newspaper article suggests the Prophet Mohammad would probably have married one of the Miss World beauty queens if he were alive today. May 2004 - Hundreds of people, mostly Muslim Fulanis, are killed by Christian Tarok militia in the central Nigerian town of Yelwa. Survivors say they buried 630 corpses. Police say hundreds were killed.

-- Muslim and Christian militants fight street battles later the same month in the northern city of Kano. Christian community leaders say 500-600 people, mostly Christians, were killed in two days of violence.

Feb. 2006 - At least 157 people die in a week of rioting by Muslim and Christian mobs. The violence begins in the northeastern city of Maiduguri when a Muslim protest against Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad runs out of control. Revenge attacks follow in the south.

Nov. 2008 - Clashes between Muslim and Christian gangs triggered by a disputed local government election kill at least 700 people in the central city of Jos, according to U.S.-based Human Rights Watch.

Feb. 2009 - The governor of Bauchi state imposes a night curfew on Bauchi city on Feb. 22, a day after clashes in which at least 11 people die, 28 are seriously wounded and several houses, churches and mosques are burned down.

July 2009 - Boko Haram, an organisation which opposes Western education and demands the adoption of sharia in all of Nigeria, stages attacks in the northeastern city of Bauchi after the arrest of some of its members. More than 50 people are killed and over 100 arrested, prompting the Bauchi state governor to impose a night curfew on the state capital.

-- Boko Haram, which means "Western education is sinful", threatens further attacks on security forces.

-- Police in Maiduguri, home of Boko Haram's leader Mohammed Yusuf, say security forces killed 90 sect members on July 27. In neighbouring Yobe state, police recover the bodies of 33 sect members after a gunbattle near the town of Potiskum on July 29.

-- Yusuf is shot dead while in police detention in Maiduguri on July 30.

-- Red Cross and defence officials say more than 700 people were killed during the five-day Boko Haram uprising.

Dec. 2009 - At least 40 people are killed in clashes between security forces and members of an Islamic sect armed with machetes in the northern city of Bauchi.

Jan. 2010 - At least 460 people are reported killed after clashes between Muslim and Christian gangs in Jos, most by gunfire. Police impose a 24-hour curfew, enforced by hundreds of soldiers and police.

Dozens of people have been killed in gun battles between police and Islamist insurgents in the Nigerian city of Maiduguri. The BBC's Bilkisu Babangida got to the scene shortly after the shooting ended.

At the police headquarters the situation was alarming.

There were about 100 corpses. Most of them had gunshot wounds.

They looked to be members of a religious sect, although it was difficult to tell.

Military personnel, police and other security officers were all around the police headquarters.

They were patrolling around shooting in the air.

They were all well-armed. Even the police commissioner and all the other senior officers were holding guns.

The people were panicking - they could hear gunshots and did not really know what the security situation was.

Roadblocks and curfews

The group had attacked the new prison complex, then the police offices, houses and vehicles.

They were fighting against the police and security forces.

BBC map

After the attack, as heavily-armed police patrolled the streets, it was reported that they were going to come back to the headquarters to get revenge for the people who were killed.

But security forces seemed to keep control.

A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been put in place and security personnel are patrolling all over town - particularly outside government and police buildings.

They have also put roadblocks up all over town.

There is a lot of tension among the people - all the shops and banks have been closed all day. There has been no commercial activity whatsoever.

The police commissioner has asked people to move away from the areas where the attacks took place, and people have been moving their relatives and children to other places for safety.

'Not Muslim'

The attack was not a complete surprise. Over the past few weeks, rumours had been circulating of possible attacks just like this one.

Through text messages and mobile phone conversations people were saying these individuals were going to come out at about midnight and attack.

The rumours were right.

Now reports are saying this attack and the ones in other states could have been carried out by people loyal to a preacher called Mohammed Yusuf.

Three days ago, after 10 of his followers were apprehended by the police, journalists spoke to him by telephone and he said he would continue to struggle, against security officers and the country in general.

He belongs to an Islamic sect who does not believe in Western education - he says anybody who has Western education is not a Muslim.

Dozens of people attacked a police station in Bauchi city but were repelled, Reuters news agency said.

The agency quoted a police spokesman as saying the militants belonged to Boko Haram, a group seeking the imposition of sharia law across Nigeria.

Islamic law has been in effect in the state of Bauchi since 2001.

AFP news agency quoted a hospital nurse, Awwal Isa, as saying that as many as 42 people had been killed in Sunday's clashes.

One of the dead was a soldier, he said.

Dozens of people were also reported to have been injured.

The police spokesman, Mohammed Barau, said the situation had been brought under control and that members of the gang were being detained.

One gang member, who gave his name as Abdullah, told Reuters the group had retaliated because authorities had been arresting its leaders.

The man was also quoted as saying that the group wanted to "clean the [Nigerian] system which is polluted by Western education and uphold sharia all over the country".

In February, Bauchi was the scene of clashes between Muslim and Christian communities, which left four people dead.

Nigeria's 140 million people are split almost equally between Muslims and Christians and the two groups generally live peacefully side by side.

KANO, Nigeria (AFP) — Police arrested seven people in connection with Muslim-Christian clashes in northern Nigeria as the death toll from the weekend unrest rose to 11, police and Red Cross officials said Monday.

"So far the number of those killed stands at 11," police spokesman Mohammed Barau told AFP by telephone from Bauchi state of sectarian clashes there that left 38 wounded.

Six churches and roughly a dozen houses were also torched, a Red Cross official said.

Muslim youths went on a rampage Saturday, attacking Christians and burning churches. They said their acts were reprisals for the burning of two mosques overnight in the state capital Bauchi.

Authorities in the city have deployed troops and imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in seven areas affected by the violence.

"Normalcy has been restored," Barau said.

But dozens nursed injuries in a state better known as home to one of Nigeria's major national parks.

"We have 38 persons who sustained varying degrees of injuries in the violence," Bauchi Red Cross secretary Adamu Abubakar told AFP.

Hundreds of others displaced by the violence have sought refuge in military barracks, churches and two camps erected by the Red Cross.

Tensions have risen in Bauchi, a city of four million, since February 13 when Pentecostal Christians barricaded a pathway used by Muslims attending Friday prayers at a nearby mosque, residents said.

Bauchi suffered bloody sectarian strife in 2004 when Muslim-Christian violence in the town of Tafawa Balewa, some 100 kilometres (62 miles) away, spilled over to the city, and houses, mosques and churches were burnt.

Moped taxi-drivers clashed with Islamic police in Nigeria's Kano city after authorities began enforcing a new law banning women from being passengers on the bikes.

Hundreds of mopeds swamped the city centre, ridden by outraged drivers who attacked police with clubs and stones.

At least 11 people were injured in the clashes on Thursday.

More than 9,000 government religious police have been patrolling Kano's streets implementing the new rule, part of strict Islamic legislation introduced in 2004 and only now being enforced.

"Most of our passengers are women who pay better fares than men. This ban will further dwindle our meagre income as we will not get much patronage," said Lawal Sa'id, one of the drivers.

Irate motorcyclists, called achaba, also stopped and vandalised many of the 500 public tricycles provided by the government for women commuters.

"No amount of intimidation and lawlessness will deter us from carrying out this noble duty of stopping women from riding on achaba," said Yahaya Farouk Chedi, head of the religious police.

"We will not be cowed by anybody because we believe what we are doing is for the good of the society we want to sanitise."

Kano is one of a dozen mainly Muslim northern states to re-adopt the sharia legal system since 1999.

Their mission in Nigeria is unknown, the newspaper said.

The six men were arrested in Abuja last week, nearly two weeks after they entered Nigeria, but the news of the arrest was broken on Tuesday.

Mike Okiro, Inspector General of Police (IGP), is said to have notified President Umaru Yar'Adua and the National Security Adviser A. S. Mukhtar of the suspects arrest.

A police source said the development necessitated the IGP putting the 37 police commands nationwide on the alert.

"These Talibans were arrested in Abuja last week by the FCT Police Command. From our preliminary interaction with them, they claimed to be members of the Islamic Brotherhood," he said.

The source said what drew the suspicion of the interrogation team is that they came into the country with fake passports.

"Four of them entered the country with Zambian passports; two others had Indian passports. We have been asking them to explain why they disguised to enter Nigeria, they could not give a cogent reason why they refused to use their country's passport," he added.

According to the source, a trail of the suspects' movements since they entered the country revealed that they had visited four mosques under the guise of preaching Islam.

"They could not explain their mission but we have launched a comprehensive probe into their activities," he said.

The source added that investigations were on other security agencies might team up with the Police to unravel the mission of these Talibans.

The manner in which they disguised to secure entry into the country spoke volumes of a plot to breach the nation's security for selfish motive.

The Police and other security agencies may deport the suspects after the conclusion of investigations.

Before that, Hitler, the Nazis, and many extreme German Nationalists accused Jews of being communists. This fueled strong anti-semitic believes at the time.

Hitler disliked the Jews so much, that by conservative estimates went on to kill over six million Jews in the Holocaust.

But this is nothing compared to what Israel is going to face from its enemies in future.

America is hated just as much by many nations around the world. This is a direct result of America's resolve to be on Israel's side through thick and thin. Sort of a "the friend of my enemy is my enemy too" mantra.

So, what could be worse for Israel than losing six million of its citizens? Well, it has been prophesied that Iran, Libya, Sudan, and many other powerful Islamic nations will align themselves with Russia, and form a strong coalition force to launch a devastating attack on tiny Israel.

True to form, we see today that Iran is working feverishly to build nuclear weapons. Iran claims it's for generating electricity, but then the amount of Uranium it is enriching is many orders of magnitude more than what is required to generate electricity.

Furthermore, Ahmadinajad has said on many occasions that his sole aim is to wipe Israel off the map. We also see Russia's Putin defying the west and joining hands with Iran on nuclear projects. Russia has blocked tougher UN sanctions against Iran in the UN Security Council, where it has veto power.

How about the fact that Russia has written off Libya’s old Soviet debt estimated at $4.5 billion? Russia has contracts with Muammar Qaddaf on building the Sirt-Benghazi railway. Additionally, Libya has plans for purchasing Russian armaments such as the S-300PMU and Tor-M1 surface-to-air missiles.

Taking these facts into account, it may not be too far fetched to give credence to the prophecy that Israel is going to be attacked by Russia and Iran, and a coalition of other nations.

But why would all these nations want to destroy Israel?

One reason is that Israel is surrounded by huge oil deposits. Russia and Iran are banana republics that rely solely on oil wealth for their survival.

Another reason is that Israel is a very wealthy nation. In the Middle East, Israel accounts for a mere 2% of the population, yet the tiny country is home to the world’s most innovative technological advancements.

By conquering Israel, all of Israel's wealth becomes available to these nations.

This is a disturbing trend. How is it that in the 21st century, there are still nations like Russia that espouse the elimination of another nation? Especially after Russia's humiliating defeat in Afghanistan.

Are we in danger of World War III if Israel is attacked? The answer is yes, it's very likely.

If Israel is attacked, the USA certainly wouldn't sit on the sidelines, particularly since Russia has, unwittingly or by design, now made itself an enemy of the United States. It's very likely the US would defend Israel with overwhelming force. US is already building up warships in the Black sea. We are also aware of the Russo-American. Anti-Missiles' Controversy about Missiles system in the Czech Republic and Poland.

What about Saudi Arabia, what role is it likely to play in the event that Israel is attacked? Well, one could say that since Saudi Arabia and Iran hate each other, Saudis may be more inclined to throw their support toward Israel. The last thing Saudi Arabia wants is a dominant Iran in the middle East.

If allowed to gain strength, Iran would ultimately attack Saudi Arabia for its oil wealth, since Iran's oil has been estimated to run out in 13 years.

Another reason why Saudi Arabia may fight alongside Israel is that Saudis are Sunnis, while Iranians are Shiites. Those two Islamic factions don't see eye to eye.

How could a war against Israel affect Nigeria? Well, anything that results in a world war, is sure to plunge the world economy into chaos. A slow global economy means lower oil consumption, and therefore lower oil prices. What would Nigeria do without oil revenues?

There is a silver lining in all of the doom and gloom, however. And that is that Israel would win if attacked by the aforementioned nations.

For a closer look at this topic, read Ezekiel 38 and 39, and the War of Gog and Magog.

Acting under the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Christians demanded an explanation for making payments believed to be arrears of Nigeria’s membership dues since 1986, when Nigeria was said to have joined the organization: They also want to know why such payments were made without the approval of the National Assembly.

CAN also demanded from the present president, Umaru Yar’Adua an explanation to the country why he led a federal delegation to the just concluded meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Countries in Darkar, Senegal.

We think Nigerians truly need to understand why the two presidents did what they have been alleged to have done. Religion being one of the most sensitive issues all over the world, needed to have been handled with a little more care and openness.

If a timely response is not offered, Nigerians could be tempted to consider any option that may not help the country. Already, the foreign ministry has tried to justify Yar’Adua’s trip with the earlier decision of a Christian president to pay the nation’s membership dues.

Also, the umbrella body of Muslims in Nigeria, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) had said that Nigeria would enjoy enormous economic benefits from belonging to OIC. Maybe, another group would want to say Nigeria cannot exist without OIC. This is sad.

Nigeria has enjoyed reasonable religious tolerance over the years, in spite of occasional religious outbursts, in the north. Even in those cases, it had always been the Muslims targeting Christian over non-issues. If the government must do anything as it stands, it should never make any of the religions feel ignored or despised.

The secularity of Nigeria is even a constitutional issue that gives no president the privilege to corner the country into any organisation. When the idea was first mooted in the 1980s, the controversy it raised was huge. It was then left alone. This should have directed further action.

But for anyone to reduce Nigeria to an Islamic country, without formal approval of the people or their representative, he cannot be said to mean well for this country. It is insulting. In fact, no good Muslim would support this outright falsehood. For the average Christian it is most aweful and the government would need to un-do its steps.

Nigerians did not vote for these presidents to go and force Nigerians into any religious organization. A thing even the military feared to do, is what these civilian governments have done. That they even by-passed the National Assembly and paid such huge sums out at a time poverty was on the rise in Nigeria is inexcusable.

We expect the National Assembly to take up this matter with the two presidents. No Nigerian would want anything other than outright dissociation of Nigeria from OIC and the immediate refund of the said dues. Nigeria has never been and will never be a member of OIC.

Although the West attaches stigma to some religions, we think that the Nigerian Muslim is largely reasonable, agreeable and brotherly. Even so, the Christians or the other religions should not be swallowed up under any guise or ignorance.
